BATTLE FOR BERLIN

April 22, 1945

End of war in Europe: On the 25th of April the armies of the Russian generals Schukow and Konjew found themselves on the western side of Berlin. The city was encircled. On the 26th, the Russian troops invaded the city with overwhelming numbers. A hopeless fight began. Nevertheless; no easy victory was expected by Russians. They had to take every single street and every single house.

The remains of the 9th Paratrooper Division extracted themselves from the Oder front and were attached to the garrison in the German capital.

Hitler held out in the Reichs Chancellery bunker and hoped for rescue through relief assaults of battle group "Steiner," the 12th Army "Wenck", as well as the rest of the 9th Army. However, hopes dashed, he committed suicide on the afternoon of 30 April 1945.
