                         Pacific General
                            Scenario:
                    The Battle of Bovallstrand
                             Sweden
                           Release 1.0

IMPORTANT:
To play this scenario at all, it is imperative that you are using the
enhanced equipment roster for Pacific General. The roster adds many
new units not available in the "official" releases from SSI, which this
scenario uses. The roster is fully compatible with the Pacific General
main game, scenarios and campaign, so there's no reason why not to use
it! The enhanced equipment roster should be found on the web at the
Pacific General Armory... the site's address is:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/sgt_stryker/pacgen.htm

Note that this version requires the equipment roster 2.0 or later (among other things, Swedish motortorpedo-boats (MTBs) must be present!).

INSTALLATION:
After unzipping this file, copy or move the "Bovall.scn" file into
the "Save" directory of your Pacific General folder. To play, choose
the "Start a Scenario" option on the main screen... next choose the
"Load Homemade Scenario" button from the bottom of the screen, then
select the "Bovall.scn" file and you are ready to play!

THE SITUATION:
It is May 23rd, 1941 ...

What actually happened:
On May 20th, 1941, the German battleship "Bismarck" was
spotted outside Gothenburg+ from the Swedish cruiser "Gotland".
A report was quickly sent to the Commander of the Westcoast Marine
District and immediately transferred to the Marine Command in Stockholm.
A certain "Toernberg" saw the report ...
Later this evening, the Norvegian Military Attach got hold of the
British Marine Attach at a restaurant. A message was rapidly sent
to London ...

+In the Swedish version of the book "The battleship Bismarck" by
Burkard von Mullenheim-Rechberg, it is written that "Gotland" was
NOT at Kullen which is situated further South.

What could have happened:
What if the Germans knew more about this Swedish "leak"?
What if information about this special Swedish-Norwegian-British
report-chain was passed to the German leader?

A furious temper may have ordered "Bismarck" to stop his*
course towards Norway, and wait for a quickly created task force to,
with no further delay, invade Sweden at the nearest, most appropriate
fjord. What would have been a more natural choice then the "Pearl Harbor" of Sweden, Bovallstrand, also well-known for its stone industry.

*yes, Bismarck was a "he" according to his Commander Ernst Lindemann
Some people say that stones in the area were cut to be used at the
Hitler's and Speer's "New Berlin" but never shipped. The stones are still there ...

However, it just so happened that the Swedish Navy, under the cover of
the thousands of islands along the coast, had anchored and prepared
to enjoy the traditional Swedish midsummer festival in Bovallstrand this year. Especially, the Free Mountain Fortress and the Falcon Heath Airfield became bases filled with forces (these places were also well-known meeting spots for enjoyments like dancing, etc. Very much appreciated by naval people ...)

GAMEPLAY:
The scenario contains many of the important Swedish naval units at the
time. Some were very recently built as of May 1941. The Swedish Bofors
guns should already be familiar for anyone interested in artillery
and air defence.

All Swedish names (ships, places, etc) have been adjusted to NOT use
umlauts (a with two dots, etc.).

A special feature of this scenario is the detailed level of the
archipelago incl. names of islands, etc, see also below.

Night turns occur every third turn and expanded/enhanced naval rules will be noticed right-off, so plan accordingly.

As the Axis player, you will have to capture the victory-hexes close
(and South) of Bovallstrand. As the Allies player, you shall defend
these hexes.

There are many strategies to try out, due to the many islands
and narrow passages in between. As there are a few transport
movements initially, you should make a "global" strategy from
the start. It is a "big" map, 70x70, so watch your fuel indicator ...

As the Axis player, you have the choice to deploy your forces at a number of places (even deploy the paratroopers up North at Hamntaangen and later ship them South to Bovallstrand). Watch for submarines! You will need your battleships ...
As the Allies player, you have more prestige at the start and you
certainly will need this to "mobilize" (Swedish expression!) your coast
forces efficiently. Use your naval forces in a coordinated way ...

The game should be optimally balanced for a two (multi)player game.

This scenario and the map was designed by Olof Friberg. Any comments or

The updated roster with Swedish forces was created by Steven Strayer,
strayer@bigfoot.com, and his work is gratefully acknowledged. Thank
you for your work and all interesting emails, Steve!

The map was created using the map-editor by Fred Chlanda,
CHLANDA@prodigy.net. (The map was created using a scanned
picture of a detailed Bovallstrand-map, scale 1:20000. Colours were first adjusted to fit the map-editor. Then all coast lines were "hand-made" to achieve a good match with the real archipelago.) Thanks for this good editor, Fred! Thanks also for a good hint on how to be able to run in multiplayer mode with home-made scenarios. I had problems with that and had to use the campaign editor by Bill Hearing, i.e. the solution was to read in the home-made scenario into this editor and to save the scenario in the PacGen in-built scenario format, for example as Midway.scn, Midway.des, Midway.tit and Smidway.tst. Then it worked!
