"PLAY FROM TORCH...9 SLOT"

Revision History:

v1.0 02-19-99 Initial Release
v1.1 02-26-99 Lowered Allied combat/prestige attributes in order reduce the difficulty of an Axis victory.

Scenario Background:

September 1944 the British army under Field Marshal Montgomery launched an ambitious offensive to establish a bridgehead over the River Rhine. Multiple factors conspired to bring failure upon the British. British intelligence warnings concerning the presence of Panzer units were not seriously accounted for, drop zones were not planned for success and the actual advance was not pursued as aggressively as was required. There was no lack of courage or fighting skill among the defenders or attackers, only generals far removed from reality.

Scenario Notes:

For a victory, the German army must route the British advance and recapture all of the objective cities.

This scenario is designed for the British (as played by the AI) to be aggressive. Recommend that solitaire games be played from the German side. In PBM games the British hold a significant edge, therefore, it is recommended that PBM games be balanced by providing the Axis with an additional +2 in prestige.

The game is designed so that the Germans can not mobilize new units until the fourth turn of the game. This features allows the British (the recommended AI side) to make an advance towards Arnhem opposed by only the few German units initially deployed. To win therefore, the Germans will need to make a resounding counter attack to recapture all of the lost objective cities. The starting date of the scenario has been set to late August, and the Panzequp.eqp file highly modified in order to incorporate the delay of the German reserves. Do not use the attached Panzequp.eqp file with any other scenario and do not substitute any other Panzequp.eqp in place of the file provided with this scenario.

In the PBM game it is possible for the British to capture all of the German owned cities, thereby preventing the Germans from ever mobilizing the counter attack forces. It is suggested that the Cheyenne PBM opponents agree to gentleman's rules prior to the game so that the Germans have access to at least one city for deployment of their relief forces.
