Background
----------

This is a LARGELY COUNTERFACTUAL scenario. The author
hypothesizes a radically different approach to WWII by the Third Reich.
Instead of planning "Barbarossa", Germany attempts to consolidate her
gains in the west and secure adequate sources of raw materials vital to
the war effort over the longer term. To this effect, the Third Reich
informs the United States that they have no intention whatsoever to
invade the United Kingdom, EVER ! Moreover, they keep on reassuring the
Soviets that they intend to honour their commitments under the
Non-aggression Pact.... In the fall and early winter of 1940, the Third
Reich strikes, almost simultaneously, in Scandinavia and the Balkans.....

In Scandinavia, the author hypothesizes a well-orchestrated
german attack on Sweden, long suspected of pro-british leanings.....The
Third Reich aims at securing plentiful iron ore supplies as an inexorable
strategic preparation and prelude to a potential challenge by the Soviet
Union. At first, the Finns decide to acquiesce to some german units being
stationed in selected cities and ports of theirs ! However, Field-Marshal
Mannerheim suddenly passes away and this creates political instability in
Finland that leads to civil unrest. The Third Reich deals a quick,
surgical blow to Sweden and ensures that a government friendly to Germany
re-establishes control over finnish civilian and military life.......

At the same time, Germany stations significant forces in Rumania
to guard that country's vital oilfields from soviet attack. In the
Balkans, a joint italo-german operation directed against Greece is about
to commence. To boot, Yugoslavia, being surrounded by hostile armies and
facing internal unrest in Croatia, experiences a grave government crisis
that paralyzes all central decision-making in that country.....

The author also hypothesizes that, when Italy annexed Albania
back in 1939, Greece went ahead and occupied a slice of albanian
territory in the south to "protect" ethnic Greeks living there. The aim
of the italo-german plan is to "cut Greece in half" ! It is generally
hoped that when the Greeks in greek Macedonia and Thrace find themselves
isolated, they will stop fighting the italo-germans and will actually
plead their case with them so that Bulgaria is not allowed to take full
advantage of the situation.....As for the Greeks south of the
Ioannina-Larisa line, it is possible that some german units stationed in
Rumania may have to be diverted into Greece depending on british
moves.....The Greeks implement Defense Plan "Papagos Plus" named after a
well known greek general and military planner. At this stage, the United
Kingdom is also hypothesized to have committed certain air assets in
support of its ally, Greece, Can the Greeks delay the italo-german
onslaught long enough for british land units to arrive and become fully
operational around Larisa ?
